Check out what's going on at Gulf Shores Middle!

Attending events and staying updated on what's going on at Gulf Shores Middle School are great ways for students and families to engage with each other and our community! Read our school announcements to view our highlighted upcoming activities  and connect with a specific event.

Reminders:
Check grades frequently.
Review the dress code and technology policy with your student.
Check lost and found! We have a lot of clothing, lunch boxes, and water bottles.

Final Exemption Policy: Our school policy allows students to be exempt from final exams (in May) in core subjects if they meet these conditions: they score well on end-of-year diagnostic tests, maintain at least a B average in the course all year, and have fewer than five unexcused absences for the school year. This helps reward students who perform consistently well and attend regularly by exempting them from final exams in those subjects.

GSMS Athletic Event Reminders: As we approach an exciting season of athletic events, please remember that students are not allowed to remain on campus between school and athletic events. All students must be picked up before 3:15 PM each day, unless they are involved in a school-sanctioned after-school event. Additionally, students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to attend any school athletic event, and tickets for these events are priced at $6. Your cooperation ensures the safety and enjoyment of all students while supporting our teams. Thank you for your continued involvement and support.

GSMS Highlights 3/15/2024
At Gulf Shores City Schools, the spirit of giving back is not just a one-time event; it's a core value woven into the fabric of our school culture. Yesterday, we celebrated Gulf Shores Gives Back, an inaugural event that exemplifies our commitment to serving our community. We united in various volunteer projects aimed at enhancing our community. From cleaning up beaches to washing windows for local businesses, biking through parks for clean-up drives, pressure washing, and even crafting cookie boxes, our students and staff demonstrated their dedication to making a positive impact.
But our commitment to community engagement extends beyond special events. Last week, we witnessed the birth of a new club at GSMS. Inspired by their passion for a new hobby, students came together to form the Crochet Club. This club not only serves as a platform for students to share their interests but also aims to teach others about the craft. With weekly meetings scheduled in the library, there's ample opportunity for everyone to get involved.
In the realm of academics, our 8th graders embarked on an exciting journey into the realm of physics with Erdossy's science class. Under the intriguing banner, "Come on Barbie, let’s go bungee!" students delved into the principles of energy, specifically gravitational and elastic potential energy. Putting their knowledge to the test, they engineered safe bungee jumps for Barbie dolls, integrating concepts of force, motion, and energy in a thrilling activity.
Mae-Margaret Reed recently represented GSMS at the Veterans Court in Foley. Through her Red Ribbon project, Mae-Margaret collected donations from both the school and the community. Her efforts resulted in the donation of gift bags filled with goodies and funds to cover the cost of drug tests for veterans. Her exemplary leadership and dedication reflect the values we cherish at Gulf Shores Middle School.
Looking ahead, exciting events are on the horizon. With only one week left before Spring Break, we encourage students to stay on top of their assignments. As we prepare for the upcoming ACAP Testing, Reach & Teach Concert, masquerade, banquet, NJHS induction ceremonies, and various awards days, there's a buzz of anticipation in the air. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students and bidding farewell to another successful academic year.
As we march towards the end of the school year, Gulf Shores Middle School remains a beacon of academic excellence and community engagement. Together, we strive to nurture not only the minds but also the hearts of our students, preparing them to become compassionate, responsible citizens of tomorrow.

GSMS Highlights 2/2/2024

Thank You for ACAP Efforts!
First and foremost, a big shoutout to the incredible students at Gulf Shores Middle School for giving their best shot at the Practice ACAP test this week! Your hard work and dedication are truly commendable, and our teachers are eager to delve into the data obtained. This valuable information will guide us in tailoring instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.

The Mushroom Man Unveiled!
Last week, Mrs. Morales's Sustainability class had a fascinating encounter with none other than "Tan the Mushroom Man." Tan shared his expertise on where and how mushrooms grow, captivating the students with his journey of turning passion into a business. The session included a taste test that was nothing short of an adventure, featuring mushrooms with flavors reminiscent of fish, pork, and even Nutella! A big thank you to Tan for enlightening our students on the wonders of fungi.

Litterless Lunches
From Mrs. Erdossy - “We started Litterless Lunches in October, and so far, our students have brought a total of 938 waste-free lunches to school. This means that nothing from their lunchboxes needed to be thrown away- no packaging, no plastic water bottles, etc.According to Earthday.org, the average lunchbox contains about 6 ounces of plastic and packaging waste. This means that GSMS students prevented about 352 pounds of trash from heading to the landfill in just a few months! November and December were also short months with holidays and half days.To me, the best part of this is that our students came up with and are leading this project. I went to my 6th graders after lunch one day and told them the litter outside was becoming a problem and asked them to come up with ideas to help. They researched information about how litter affects the world and specifically our area. They made a video for social media to spread the word about Litterless lunches. They planned how to collect the data each day. Students tally the totals of Litterless Lunches each lunch wave, and all I do is keep up with our numbers. I’m so proud of them!”

Top Golf Field Trip
Exciting news for students with a stellar 95% attendance in January! You've earned a fantastic field trip to Top Golf, but remember, submit those forms to the front office by 3 PM on February 8th – late forms won't be accepted! Check the grade level canvas to confirm eligibility. Keep in mind that both daily attendance and any instances of late check-ins or early check-outs could affect your qualification. Please note that having received an office referral this quarter or failing a class disqualifies you from the trip. However, failing grades can be redeemed – improve them to passing by February 8th, show Ms. Reeves, and she'll add you back to the list. If you're unsure about eligibility, check PowerSchool for attendance and grades, and reach out to Ms. Reeves at breeves@gsboe.org. Don't forget, permission slips and payments are due to the front office by 3PM on Thursday, February 8th. Don't miss out on this unforgettable Top Golf adventure!

Green Thumbs and Garden Delights!
In an inspiring collision of science, life, and gardening, our students proudly showcased impressive cabbage heads they nurtured. The cafeteria staff turned these into a delicious lunch for everyone to enjoy. But it doesn't stop there – our green-thumbed students also planted carrot, celery, and radish seeds. Gardening is about more than just planting; it's about sustainability and responsibility. Students took time to weed and contribute to composting by diverting paper shreds from the landfill. Kudos to our eco-conscious learners!

GSMS Highlights 1/5/2024
We hope you and your family had a fantastic winter break, filled with joy and relaxation. It's been wonderful to see all the smiling faces back on campus this week, ready to tackle the challenges and successes that the new semester holds.
As we gear up for the second half of the school year, we have some important updates and reminders to share with you:

Tutoring Resumes Next Week:
Starting next week, tutoring sessions will resume to provide additional support for your child's academic success. To ensure smooth operations, please sign up your child for ONE time slot each day. Please note that each student can only attend one subject per day. You can easily sign up by clicking here.

Free Breakfast and Lunch:
As a reminder, all students receive a free breakfast and lunch each day. Additionally, if your child wishes to purchase seconds, they must have money on their account and wait to be called before heading to the serving area.

Assignment and Assessment Deadlines:

To help your child stay on track, please be aware of the upcoming deadlines for assignments and assessments:

January assignments and assessments lock on February 9th

February assignments and assessments lock on March 7th

March assignments and assessments lock on April 5th

April assignments and assessments lock on May 10th

May assignments and assessments lock on May 22nd

All finals must be taken by May 24th, so please encourage your child to manage their time effectively.

Dress Code and Cell Phone Policy:
We kindly request parents to revisit the parent handbook and review the dress code and cell phone policies with their child. It's essential to note that infractions accumulate throughout the school year and do not reset. We have observed major concerns regarding pajama pants, the length of shorts, and bedroom slippers—all of which are not permitted.

Excitement for a Successful Semester:
We are thrilled about the possibilities and achievements the second semester holds for our students. Regularly checking PowerSchool for grades and staying in touch with your child's teachers will greatly contribute to their academic progress. Your partnership in your child's education is invaluable, and we appreciate your ongoing support.

Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education, and here's to a successful and fulfilling second semester!
